Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City, and with almost 470,000 residents, it is the smallest of the five in terms of population. Located southwest of Manhattan and west of Long Island, it possesses a much more suburban environment than is found in most other parts of the city. The largest landfill in the world, Fresh Kills Landfill, used to be located on Staten Island, but it was closed almost a decade ago and the land is in the process of being reclaimed to create a massive public park. The Island officially became a borough of New York in 1898, though at the time the borough was called Richmond -- it was renamed Staten Island in 1975, though the area is still coterminous with Richmond County. Staten Island actually attempted to secede from New York City in 1993 due to concerns of overdevelopment on the island, but the secession was prevented by the New York State Assembly. In spite of this development, Staten Island is still home to the Gateway National Recreation Area and five national parks and is host to an array of wildlife. It is connected to New Jersey via the Outerbridge Crossing, the Bayonne Bridge, and the Goethals Bridge, while transportation into Manhattan comes courtesy of the Staten Island Ferry and into Brooklyn via the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
