On Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court scheduled arguments on the combative issue of same-sex marriage for April 28. A ruling is expected to come in late June. In the meantime, 379 groups and businesses across an array of sectors are showing their support for gay marriage.
Some of America's largest financial institutions and companies have signed a friend-of-the-court brief to support the cause. Just a few of these companies include Google Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Bank of America, Apple, General Electric, AIG, and JPMorgan.
The brief argues that allowing same-sex couples will improve employee morale and productivity, and reduce uncertainty while removing the wasteful administrative burdens imposed by the disparity in current state laws.
There are a number of other supporters who will be filing by Friday's deadline. Once such brief filed for dozens of respected conservatives, including Ken Mehlman, former Republican National Committee Chairman.
Over a period of two and a half hours, nine justices will reflect on whether gay marriage bans are unconstitutional.
To date, same-sex marriage is allowed in 37 states; however, there is currently an ongoing battle in Alabama, where the state's top court has put the matter on hold. On Tuesday, the Alabama Supreme Court ordered probate judges to stop issuing marriage licenses for same-sex marriages.
The General Social Survey, conducted by NORC, found that support for same-sex marriage in America has risen, and so has the acceptance of same-sex couples. The survey found that 56% of Americans agree that gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to marry, up from 48% in 2012.
